Newsstand: Former Notre Dame cornerback signs with Chicago Bears

Nick McCloud only played one season for the Fighting Irish but it was an impactful one. After playing for a few years at NC State, McCloud transferred to Notre Dame for his final season of eligibility and played in 12 games for the Fighting Irish in their run to the College Football Playoff in 2020.

McCloud totaled 33 tackles (2 for loss), 1 interception, 8 passes defended and 2 fumble recoveries during his lone season in the blue and gold.

He went undrafted in 2021 but has carved out an NFL career. And on Monday, he signed with the Chicago Bears to a one-year contract.

Below is part of a press release from the Bears to announce the move:

McCloud arrives in Chicago after totaling 48 career regular-season games played (16 starts) for the Cincinnati Bengals (2021), New York Giants (2022-24) and San Francisco 49ers (2024). Since entering the league in 2021 as an undrafted free agent with the Buffalo Bills, McCloud has totaled 84 tackles (61 solo), 10 passes defensed, including one interception, three tackles for loss, three forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries, as well as an additional forced fumble in the postseason. McCloud, who added two postseason appearances with the Giants in 2022, has also spent time on the practice squad of the Buffalo Bills (2021).

A native of Rock Hill, S.C., McCloud prepped collegiately at Notre Dame (2020) and North Carolina State (2016-19), amassing 49 career games played with four interceptions and three fumble recoveries. In his lone season at Notre Dame, McCloud earned Third-Team All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors after collecting a team-high eight passes defensed for the Fighting Irish.

Quote of the day

“I find it hard to not thrive in Coach Denbrock’s offense with his creativity and having Coach Freeman and Coach Brown constantly letting me know I’m a top priority at such a prestigious school is a blessing and a degree from Notre Dame is up there competing with the Ivy league schools.”
