4-star FSU commit Lawayne McCoy lists Miami as No. 2 school, will be on campus Sunday and expects to take Hurricanes official visit

Miami (Fla.) Central four-star 2024 receiver Lawayne McCoy slipped through the Hurricanes‘ fingers when he committed to Florida State April 13, but that hasn’t stopped the Canes from aggressively pursuing the top-250 prospect in the On3 Industry Ranking.
McCoy will return to Miami on Sunday as his team competes in the Hurricanes’ 7-on-7 competition and offensive line/defensive line challenge, which is expected to be his first time on campus since committing to Florida State. His return to campus marks a tremendous opportunity for the Hurricanes to interact with McCoy face-to-face as Miami aggressively tries to flip him from Florida State.
McCoy said he talks to Miami “pretty much every day” and talks to head coach Mario Cristobal more than any other coach. He expects Miami to ask him to stick around after camp as well.
He feels he can say the Hurricanes are his No. 2 school behind Florida State although Oregon, UCF, Penn State and Louisville are among other programs pushing. He expects to take an official visit to Miami at some point but isn’t certain about a date.
Miami continues to pursue 4-star FSU commit Lawayne McCoy and maybe it isn’t over
“(Cristobal) is pretty much just saying he wants me to play for him,” McCoy said. “… I’m sure when I get down (for camp Sunday) there I’ll stick around a bit.”
The 6-foot, 170-pound receiver has been one of Miami’s top targets in this class, and it was widely viewed as a recruiting miss by the Hurricanes when Florida State was able to snatch him out of the Canes’ backyard. This weekend is a tremendous opportunity for Miami to continue to close that gap, which may not be as wide as some view.
5 prospects Miami will try to flip in the 2024 recruiting class
CaneSport’s Take
It doesn’t feel like McCoy is close to flipping away from the Seminoles, but he’s undoubtedly a prospect Miami needs to continue to bring to campus if the Hurricanes want to keep him in South Florida.
McCoy has become one of the top high school targets in South Florida and is listed as the No. 42 prospect in the state. He’ll likely continue to rise in future recruiting updates as he continues to be a top target for Power Five programs.
