Adam Sandler responds to high school golfer Happy Gilmore committing to play in college

There are plenty of fake social media accounts and fake names on the internet nowadays. That number only increases with time. It can be difficult at times to determine what’s real and what’s fake. On Friday morning, when the news surfaced that a guy named Happy Gilmore actually committed to Ball State to play college golf, it was hard to believe. It had to be some sort of a joke, right? Wrong.

Here is the initial tweet from the golfer, and yes, his real name is Happy Gilmore. Happy is his nickname.

I am very excited to announce that I have committed to continue my academic and golf career at Ball State University. I am very grateful for the opportunity Coach Fleck has given me! I would like to thank my family, my friends and coaches who push me everyday! @BallStateMGolf pic.twitter.com/nz36to47J2

“I am excited to announce that I have committed to continue my academic and golf career at Ball State University. I am very grateful for the opportunity Coach Fleck has given me! I would like to thank my family, my friends and coaches who push me everyday!” Gilmore tweeted.

As you might imagine, the announcement caught the attention of the man who played Happy Gilmore in the hit movie, Adam Sandler. Check out Sandler’s tweet to Happy Gilmore here.

Go get em Happy. Pulling for you. https://t.co/4o4LOoAWDN

“Go get ’em Happy. Pulling for you,” Sandler tweeted.

Happy Gilmore is easily one of the best sports movies of all-time and it’s beloved by people all across the country. Adam Sandler did some of his finest work in that movie. My point is this.

If you’re going to name yourself Happy Gilmore, you’d better be good. And you’d better have a sense of humor. Because you’re going to get tweeted quotes from the movie and retold quotes from the movie pretty much every day.

It wouldn’t be surprising at all to see Gilmore land some NIL opportunities in the near future.

The Ball State version of Happy Gilmore’s real name is Landon “Happy” Gilmore.

He’s worked his way up through the junior ranks in Bloomington, Indiana. On Friday after he committed to the Cardinals on Twitter, not only did he get a shout-out from Sandler, but he also got a shout-out from Shooter McGavin, otherwise known as Christopher McDonald.

Check that tweet out below.

Congrats but I tell you what, you’d be something in one of those long drive contests. Hell, you’d probably make a very good living. Traveling around, hustling at driving ranges. Just a thought. https://t.co/TzbPTQI39T

“Congrats but I tell you what, you’d be something in one of those long drive contests. Hell, you’d probably make a very good living. Traveling around, hustling at driving ranges. Just a thought,” McGavin tweeted.

Happy Gilmore played his high school golf for Bloomington South High School (Bloomington, Indiana) and was ranked 481st in the Golfweek Boys Junior Rankings, according to an article written by Tod Leonard of Golf Digest. He played on the U.S. Kids Tour events, as well as playing in the Hurricane National Championships, where he earned Player of the Year honors in 2020.

Landon Gilmore doesn’t feel any added pressure with the name

As far as the added pressure with the hilarious name, Landon Gilmore recently told the Indianapolis Star: “I don’t think it adds any pressure to me. But I do know that whatever I do is going to be seen. Especially as far as leaderboards when people are scrolling down and see ‘Happy Gilmore’ they are going to look at it, obviously. So, I do know that, but I don’t let it get in my head or that I have to play good because of it. I just go out and do my thing.”

Good luck with that. It’ll be interesting to see how his college golfing career shakes out.
