Mark Pope credits Kentucky players for making history in first season

Eleven months ago, Kentucky appeared to be in dire straits. It’s new head coach, Mark Pope, didn’t have a single NCAA Tournament win under his belt, no scholarship players were returning on the roster and John Calipari was taking over half of his 2024 recruiting class with him to Arkansas.

However, Pope didn’t panic. Instead, he put his nose to the grindstone. In just a few months, Pope constructed a roster that could compete for a national championship. After Kentucky picked up a program-record eighth win against a top-15 opponent on Saturday, Pope discussed his wild first season at the helm of the Wildcats.

“It’s just an insane number,” Pope said. “If you come to Kentucky and you can do something all-time at the University of Kentucky as a team, like all-time, at Kentucky, and you think about the people who have rolled through here.

“For this group now to hold that record, is just insane and then in the history of the game of college basketball for them to be tied, it’s a credit to these guys man. It’s a special group, and it hasn’t been an easy road. Like, we’ve been tested every way in health, and rotation stuff and all of this stuff has been a massive, massive challenge and these guys just keep raising up to it… It’s been pretty fun.”

It’s been a tumultuous but ultimately successful season for Kentucky. The ‘Cats burst out of the starting gates with non-conference wins over Duke and Gonzaga early in the season. However, an injury bug began to sweep through the team, sidelining several players for multiple games, along with Jaxson Robinson and Kerr Kriisa for the season.

Alas, Kentucky continued to adapt and is now projected to be a 3-seed in the NCAA Tournament, according to ESPN’s bracketologist Joe Lunardi. The ‘Cats finished sixth in the SEC regular season standings to earn a bye in the conference tournament.

Mark Pope isn’t satisfied with making regular season history. On Monday, the 52-year-old head coach reassured fans that the Wildcats are hungry for postseason success in all forms.

“We’re going to win. That’s why we’re going down there,” Pope said during his call-in radio show. “And that doesn’t guarantee us the win, but we’re very clear on that objective, and we understand how important this is and what it means to BBN and what it means to our guys. So we’re going to go chase it as hard as we can. It’s going to be a challenge from the get go. This league is so fantastic, but why would you want anything less?”
