Grein shines as No. 11 Oregon edges out No. 8 Florida State
No. 11 Oregon and No. 8 Florida State came into Friday night’s Top-15 anticipated matchup, evenly matched statistically. But at the end of the night, the Ducks came out victorious in a small-margin 2-0 victory in the opening game of the Jane Sanders Classic in Eugene, Oregon.
They did so with junior right-hander Lyndsey Grein dealing an impressive performance in the circle, crediting her with back-to-back complete game shutouts after her last start against San Diego on March 1st. Grein has a total of 16 strikeouts from her last two outings.
Grein threw an exact total of 100 pitches and retired nine batters in a row while only holding Florida State to a lone hit, which was a single that belonged to Kennedy Harp in the top of the first inning. After that, the Seminoles’ bats were unable to muster anything against Grein for the rest of the game. Florida State only had two baserunners the last six innings via an error and a walk.
But the difference maker was sophomore catcher Braiesey Rosa’s two-run home run in the bottom frame of the second inning which put the Ducks on top and kept them there the remainder of the night. Rosa’s first career home run was a game changer and the sole run source for Oregon. Rosa was filling in for starting catcher Emma Cox.
Though Florida State’s offense was hushed, its defense was able to keep the Ducks, who have a team batting average of 0.347, to just two scores and six hits. One of those hits came off the bat of senior outfielder Kedre Luschar, who continued her 9-game hitting streak with a double to center field.
While Oregon came out of tonight with the upset win, Florida State still has the opportunity to return the favor Sunday when the two teams are slated to play again at 2:30 p.m.
The Jane Sanders Classic continues tomorrow at 3:30 with an in-state rivalry between Oregon and Oregon State.
