Legendary high school basketball coach Kevin Boyle to leave Montverde Academy (Fla.)

Kevin Boyle, longtime head basketball coach of Montverde Academy (Fla.), is leaving the powerhouse program following the end of the 2024-25 season to become the new head coach at SPIRE Academy (Ohio), he told ESPN on Wednesday.

The four-time Naismith High School Coach of the Year has been at the helm at Montverde since 2011 and has propelled the Eagles to national championships in eight of the last 12 seasons.

He’s coached numerous blue-chip prospects and more than 20 players who went on to the NBA, including the likes of Kyrie Irving, Joel Embiid, Cade Cunningham, Ben Simmons, D’Angelo Russell, Scottie Barnes, R.J. Barrett, Al Harrington and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist.

Boyle’s previous Montverde team featured Duke superstar Cooper Flagg, Maryland’s Derik Queen, UConn’s Liam McNeeley and Georgia’s Asa Newell, all of whom are projected to get selected in the upcoming NBA Draft. That Eagles team went undefeated at 33-0.

Boyle made the move to Montverde from St. Patrick (N.J.) in 2011. When discussing his decision to move on from the Florida power and make the move to Ohio with ESPN’s Jonathan Givony, Boyle cited how the basketball landscape has changed as a result of NIL.

“The entire landscape of high school basketball has changed,” Boyle said.

Montverde sits at 19-6 this season and ranks as the No. 10 team in the nation and No. 2 team in Florida, according to the On3 Composite Rankings. It will compete for a berth in the Chipotle National Tournament this weekend.
