Softball America Stars of the Week: Curd, Grein, Benning, Coffey

Softball America Stars of the Week: Curd, Grein, Benning, Coffey

The Softball America staff will pick four student-athletes as our Stars of the Week following the latest slate of games. Our award system isn’t necessarily stat-based but rather players who left a lasting impact as we watched games from the previous week. Who changed the tune of their teams? Who made the headlines? Who might be the breakout star during the season?

Cassidy Curd, LHP, Duke

Curd tossed 18 scoreless at the Mary Nutter Collegiate College as Duke went 5-0 at the tournament. The lefty outdueled Jordy Bahl and Taylor Tinsley en route to two shutout wins. She also picked up a pair of saves against Minnesota and BYU. She struck out 17 batters compared to walking four.

HUGE K from @casscurd to hold off the Bruins!

Lyndsey Grein, RHP, Oregon

Grein also had 18 scoreless innings, mostly from the bullpen in the Ducks’ perfect Mary Nutter appearance. She picked up four wins and essentially closed out the San Diego State win as she threw in every game this past week. She only allowed five hits during the tournament.

Allison Benning, RHP/UTL, North Florida

What didn’t Allison Benning do this weekend? She hit a home run while trying to be intentionally walked. And also threw a perfect game against Sienna. In total, she hit three home runs, while picking up two wins without allowing an earned run and only one hit. Did we mention the 11 intentional walks that did happen?

I’ve never seen a weekend stat line like this…. @allisonbenning_

Offense:
.700 batting average
3 HR’s
8 RBI
11 intentional walks

Pitching:
2-0
1 perfect game
12 innings pitched
15 K’s
1 Hit allowed all weekend
batting average against: .027
0 ERA
1 perfect game

Danieca Coffey, INF, LSU

You would never know that Coffey is coming off a season-ending injury. The LSU table setter had a .813 on-base percentage in LSU’s for wins. She collected seven hits, seven runs, six walks while also hitting a triple and a game-tying home run. It’s hard to find a better leadoff hitter right now.
