Freshman Carns goes 4-for-4 with a HR as Florida State Baseball cruises past Penn, 9-3

Freshman Carns goes 4-for-4 with a HR as Florida State Baseball cruises past Penn, 9-3

It wasn’t nearly the blowout that Friday night was, but in the end, it was another comfortable win for the Florida State baseball team on Saturday afternoon.

On the heels of a 24-2 victory to open the series, the Seminoles got a quality start on the mound from left-hander Joey Volini, and the offense pounded out 11 more hits and nine more runs in a 9-3 win over Penn at Dick Howser Stadium.

Florida State is now 6-0 on the season. Penn is 0-2.

Volini gave up two runs in 5 2/3 innings, striking out six and walking just one to pick up the first win of his FSU career. It wasn’t exactly a breeze for the lefty against the Penn bats, though, as he allowed seven hits on the day, including two doubles and a homer.

He also got out of a bases-loaded jam in the third when freshman first baseman Myles Bailey, who had made an error earlier in the inning, made a leaping catch on a line drive for the third out.

John Abraham, Peyton Prescott and Joe Charles (making his season debut) combined to allow just one earned run over the final 3 1/3 innings for the Seminoles. Charles walked two batters in the ninth but induced a 6-4-3 double play to end the game.

The final outs came as a result of a nice play by FSU shortstop Alex Lodise, who had yet another productive game for the Seminoles.

Lodised started off the scoring for Florida State with a two-run homer to center field in the first inning. Gage Harrelson then gave the Seminoles some serious breathing room in the second with a three-run triple to left.

Florida State freshman catcher Hunter Carns hit his first career homer — a solo shot off the scoreboard in left — and finished the game with four hits. He and Lodise were the only two players in the lineup with multiple hits for the Seminoles, who will go for the sweep of the Quakers on Sunday at 1 p.m.
