Dusty May contact extension: Warde Manuel provides new details on deal

Dusty May’s new contract is for five more years, Michigan athletics director Warde Manuel confirmed. His original contract with the Wolverines, signed prior to this season, was for five years at $3.75 million per year.
It’s unclear if May’s reworked extension is worth five years on top of the original amount, or five years from Friday. Regardless, he made it clear he’s staying in Ann Arbor as speculation grew about potential interest from Indiana in its head coach vacancy.
Speaking with reporters postgame, Manuel said conversations with May began before Indiana announced Mike Woodson wouldn’t return as head coach. Friday, it became official. The first-year head coach is staying put at Michigan and isn’t heading back to his alma mater.
May’s name came up right away after Indiana announced Woodson’s plans to resign after the season. A former manager under the late Bob Knight, he quickly turned Michigan around this season, putting the Wolverines squarely in the NCAA Tournament conversation. UM came in as a No. 4 seed in On3’s James Fletcher III’s latest Bracketology on Thursday.
Despite the rumors, though, May is staying in Ann Arbor. As for what his message to Michigan fans would be, he made it abundantly clear.
“I think it makes it obvious,” May told CBS Sports’ Matt Norlander about what the deal says. “I’m staying at Michigan.”
Dusty May has turned Michigan around quickly
Prior to his arrival at Michigan this year, Dusty May took Florida Atlantic to a 126-69 record over his six years at the helm. The Owls notably made a run to the Final Four in 2023 and finished second in the American Athletic Conference in 2023-24 after making the jump from Conference USA.
“I am grateful to Warde (Manuel), U-M President Santa Ono, and all the members of the Board of Regents for the trust and support they have given me as the head coach,” May said in a statement. “My goal is to bring continued success to this historic program. We cannot reach that goal without the hard work that my staff and players put into this program.
“We have built a solid foundation; however, there is much more work to be done. I look forward to those challenges and what the future holds for me and my family in Ann Arbor.”
Michigan fell to Michigan State Friday night – its first home loss at Crisler Center this season. The loss knocked the Wolverines out of first place in the Big Ten as they fell to 20-6 overall and 12-3 in league play.
