South Carolina women’s basketball Rapid Reaction: Florida

South Carolina women’s basketball Rapid Reaction: Florida

South Carolina bounced back from its first SEC loss in over three years with a 101-63 rout of Florida. Here’s what stood out to me from the game.

– Joyce Edwards is the second-fastest player on the team with a 3/4 court time of 3.00 seconds (MiLaysia Fulwiley clocks in at 2.98). She’s been really good this season at leaking out and beating opponents to the other end for easy layups.

It was pretty clear that was a point of emphasis on Thursday. I lost count of how many times she beat Florida down the court for layups, but it was a lot. You don’t have to worry about running offense if you are scoring five seconds into the shot clock.

Edwards did plenty of other things. You don’t score 28 points without doing a lot of different things. But the rim-running is what stood out.

– In my preview, I wrote that I wanted South Carolina to be efficient. 21-22 from the line is efficient. 23 assists on 36 baskets is efficient. 24 points off of 17 turnovers is efficient.

21-37 on layups isn’t as efficient, but it’s a lot better than 12-26 against Texas.

For better or worse – and it’s frustrating that it takes a loss for it to happen – this team is great at fixing things that have gone wrong.

– MiLaysia Fulwiley’s strange season continues. She had 13 points, five steals, a rebound, and a great assist (she also set up some open shots that her teammates missed). But she shot 0-6 from three and 5-17 overall.

There were some bad shots, but she also missed at least three layups that just rolled off of the rim. It’s starting to feel a lot like Zia Cooke’s junior season when making even routine shots was a struggle.

The good thing is that Fulwiley is bringing other things to the table. She is still playing tough defense and she is a willing passer who creates for her teammates.
