Kentucky will run into Tyler Herro’s brother on Saturday

Tyler Herro, who played at Kentucky in 2018-19 and was named Second-Team All-SEC, has a couple of younger brothers who also have dreams of making it to the NBA. One of them will be in Lexington when the Wildcats host South Carolina on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. EST (ESPN2).

Austin Herro is the middle child of the three Herro brothers and is a second-year player on the Gamecocks men’s basketball team. After redshirting his freshman campaign in 2023-24 as a preferred walk-on, Austin was put on scholarship by head coach Lamont Paris back in the summer. The 6-foot-3 guard has appeared in five games this season (just 1.6 MPG), mostly coming off the bench at the end of lopsided blowouts.

With that in mind, don’t expect to see young Herro take the floor on Saturday barring a 20-point lead from either side. But it would be pretty neat to see Austin check in late with Kentucky comfortably in the lead. He’s probably rather familiar with Rupp Arena going back to Tyler’s time playing there.

Hailing from the same high school, Milwaukee (WI) Whitnall, as his older brother, Austin held an offer from Cal Poly, but elected to try his hand in the SEC. Multiple injuries and the COVID-19 pandemic hampered his recruitment, but a healthy season in 2022-23 allowed him to land with the Gamecocks. Paris previously recruited Tyler to Wisconsin when he was an assistant with the Badgers from 2010-17. That relationship carried over with Austin.

The youngest of the Herro brothers is Myles, who is currently in the class of 2025 and also plays at Whitnall. Clocking in at 6-foot-1, he holds offers from Cal Poly, Western Illinois, and Southern Illinois. And yes, all three siblings look exactly alike.

Austin and Myles are solid basketball players in their own right, but they weren’t blessed with the genetics and talent Tyler, who is listed at 6-foot-5, was given. Tyler is actually having his best season yet now in year six with the Miami Heat. He was named the 2022 NBA Sixth Man of the Year but has developed into a bonafide All-Star. Tyler was honored as a first-time All-Star earlier this month. The former Wildcat is averaging 23.9 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 5.5 assists per game on shooting splits of 46.9/39.3/85.9.
