Temple (Texas) promotes 28-year-old offensive coordinator to head coaching role

Another Texas high school football coaching gig is accounted for after the Temple ISD confirmed to TempleBeltonSports.com’s Greg Wille that it was promoting offensive coordinator Chad President to run the program at Temple High.

President joined the Wildcats’ staff last year to lead the offense and now replaces former coach Scott Stewart, who stepped down in December after nine seasons at the helm.

Stewart took over in 2016 and finished with a 71-36 record during his tenure, including a state title game appearance against Highland Park in his first season.

The Wildcats finished this past season 7-4 with a first-round playoff loss to national powerhouse Duncanville. President will take over what’s been a successful program at the the 5A and 6A levels. Other than a 1-9 finish in 2023, Temple has won at least seven games in every season dating back to 2013. That included the runner-up finish in 2016, along with 10-plus win seasons in 2017 and 2020.

For President, it’s the continuation of a journey that has led him back to Temple after his college career. He played for the Wildcats during their 2014 state runner-up season and later went on to play quarterback at the University of Tulsa.

During his four seasons with the Golden Hurricane, he played in 24 games including seven starts at quarterback. However, he was hampered by knee injuries for much of his final two seasons with the program.

President returning to his roots at Temple

“It’s always been a goal of mine to go back to Temple and coach,” he told KCEN-TV last year when he was hired as an assistant. “Ever since I was 12 years old, that was my mission and goal. No matter if I was an assistant coach or coordinator.”

After he finished his time in Tulsa, President coached under ex-Temple head coach Mike Spradlin at Rockwall-Heath before taking the offensive coordinator job at Waco’s Midway High. He then joined Stewart’s staff last December.

The Wildcats’ program has a rich history, with more than 50 state playoff appearances, nine championship berths and two titles. Their last championship came in 1992, while the 2016 appearance was their most recent in the state title game.
