Zoom Action: Bad fouls, zone defense, and ball screens

The latest episode of Zoom Action takes a closer look at some of Kentucky’s recent defensive shortcomings.

The Wildcats’ 102-97 loss to Alabama last weekend marked the first time this season that Mark Pope‘s team looked spectacular on offense but still came up short. Kentucky shot 48 percent from the field and 11-27 from deep against the Crimson Tide, but gave up 15 offensive rebounds, committed 25 total fouls, and allowed 13 made three-pointers. Scoring comes easy to this group, but the defense (ranked 80th in the nation by KenPom) has yet to catch up.

In this week’s Zoom Action, Brandon Ramsey and I dove into the film from that high-scoring battle to see what went wrong for Kentucky on the other end of the floor. The defense isn’t nearly as bad as some might make it out to be, but as always, there is plenty of room for improvement.
