The 3-2-1: Calm, cool QB, recruiting wins and Purdue’s ‘juice’ coach

Two big commitments, a cool customer and an assistant with boundless juice … it’s time for the 3-2-1. Three things learned. Two questions. One prediction.
Three things learned
1 – Purdue augmented its wideout unit
It’s thought Purdue felt it still had a shot to land a commitment from JC wideout Jayden Dixon-Veal even after he pledged to Oregon State following his recent visit to West Lafayette. Sure, enough, days after Dixon-Veal committed to the Beavers, he de-committed and flipped to Purdue last week.
The Boilermakers are getting a starting-caliber receiver who lacks size (5-10, 170) but is quick in and out of his cuts and purportedly a good route-runner with quickness.
2 – Hudson Card is a cool customer
Got a chance to visit with Purdue’s No. 1 signal-caller this weekend before he conducted a camp for kids at West Lafayette High School on Saturday. And, each time I speak to Card, I’m impressed by his calm, cool manner. He comes off as very easy-going and affable … unflappable.
There was a reason Ryan Walters made it Job No. 1 to get Card out of the portal after he was hired. And, Walters got his man. Card proceeded to excel in the spring, earning effusive praise.
If he’s given time to work and can stay healthy, Card could end up being one of the most underrated portal additions for any program in the nation. No doubt, Purdue needs Card to be a star.
3 – Luke Williams was a big get
Purdue received its biggest commitment yet when four-star safety Luke Williams committed to the Boilermakers last week. It was a huge get for Walters and his staff. The Naperville, Ill., product could be the centerpiece of the coming secondaries.
Williams also was the fourth DB to commit to Purdue in the Class of 2024, which numbers nine at the moment. The other defensive backs who have pledged: Jo’Ziah Edmond, D’Mon Marable and Hudauri Hines. This position is shaping up strong.
Two questions
1 – Who is the most energetic assistant?
This one is easy: CB coach Sam Carter. He’s the “juice” coach, nosing out wideout assistant Cory Patterson, who often playfully spars with Carter during practices.
Carter’s in perpetual motion during practices. His chatter is non-stop, too. Fist bumps? Carter leads the nation, using hands that always are encased in gloves. He’s a parade of activity decked out in long pants and hoody.
One other thing: Carter has fun. And that resonates with everyone around him.
2 – How big is next weekend?
Purdue is slated to play host to its most OVs yet in June with 11 known visitors are on tap. Five of those will be committed players: QB Marcos Davila, DB D’Mon Marable, OL Jordan King, RB Jaheim Merriweather and WR Jesse Watson.
One of the most touted non-committed visitors will be TE Tayvion Galloway, a long-time LSU commit who was at UCF last weekend. Other biggies: S Koy Beasley and WR Tra’Mar Harris, who each are from Cincinnati.
CB coach Sam Carter brings the “juice” each practice.
One prediction: How many more commitments will Purdue get in June?
Purdue has gotten just two this month: Williams and Edmond. The vibe following this last weekend’s raft of official visitors seems to be a good one. I think we’ll soon hear about some commitments.
The Boilermakers seem to be well-positioned with EDGE Elijah King, DL Caleb Mitchell Irving, WR Shamar Rigby and DB William Nettles and OL Demeco Kennedy. Stay tuned. Let’s see what happens.
