Terry McAulay disputes controversial no-call for pass interference against Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Terry McAulay called out officials for missing a pass interference call in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. Washington Commanders Wild Card playoff game. During the Sunday Night Football broadcast, McAulay said a pass interference penalty should be called against Buccaneers linebacker Lavonte David in the fourth quarter.

“It is a foul for pass interference,” McAulay said. “He’s not playing the ball, he wraps him up, cuts off his path, it should have been called.”

The play in question happened when the Commanders were deep in Buccaneers territory down 17-13 early in the fourth quarter, On a fourth-and-goal play, Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels threw a pass to tight end Zach Ertz in the end zone. David had his arms wrapped around Ertz before the ball got to him, but officials didn’t call pass interference.

Terry McAulay knows all about officiating in big games as he’s worked the Super Bowl three times in his career. He joined NBC Sports as an on-air rules analust in 2018 after spending 20 years as an NFL official. In his 20 seasons, McAulay served as a referee in 17 of them. Along with working three Super Bowls, McAulay worked 15 additional playoff games, including nine conference championship games.

Washington Commadners defeat Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Wild Card playoff game

The missed call did not hurt the Commanders as they defated the Buccaneers 23-20. It’s the first playoff win for Washington since 2006.

A big reason the Commanders won was the play of Jayden Daniels who threw for 268 yards and two touchdowns in the win. “You got to learn to not let bad plays stack on top of the bad plays,” Daniels said before the game, per the Commanders’ official website. “If you have a bad play, you move on to the next play. And you can’t really focus on anything that’s in the past, you got to worry about the present, be where your feet are.”

“If I miss a throw on third down, you can’t go back and relive that throw, you got to move on,” Daniels added. “So, it’s not really just the late game situations. I mean, I guess that’s where it shows up, but it’s really throughout the whole game how I treat life.”
