Thombs Takes: Georgia grab bag question & answer

Happy Father’s Day out there to all the DawgsHQ fathers, and I hope you’re enjoying the primetime golf. We appreciate you coming to us for your Georgia sports news.
So, to celebrate the day, I’ve got some Thombs Takes for you guys, answering the questions you all have asked on the Dawg Walk message board.
Let’s jump in…
First question comes from OUHerschelWalker: I assume they will ease Andrew Paul back in. Who else of the walking wounded won’t be 100% when fall camp starts?
Jake Rowe touched on this topic a little bit in his insider notes this week. I’ll reiterate what he’s got to report. Mykel Williams should be back. He is out of the boot and off of the scooter that we saw back in the spring. That’s a good sign and falls in line with the reporting we shared at the time of the injury, all signs pointed to a quick recovery. Same goes for Marvin Jones Jr and Jalon Walker, both of whom missed spring practice after having surgery to repair torn labrums. Georgia has had a long list of guys go through that surgery and bounce back to play incredibly well, and the Bulldogs are expecting the same out of these youngsters as they enter their second season.
As for Branson Robinson and Smael Mondon, the outlook isn’t quite as good. These were both injuries that occurred during the spring as opposed to ones that were pre-existing and thus could take longer to come back from. Crazier things have happened, but with all those guys, they’re going to be extra careful. Robinson plays a position where his presence will be needed for depth purposes while Mondon is a star that they won’t want to rush back too soon.
Wes Blankenship brings up Kirk Herbstreit’s comments on Alabama, LSU and their standing going into the season relative to Georgia. Several others including MattUGA1, MegaDude and Mr. Medium Rare shared their thoughts too.
Here’s what I’ve got to say about Kirk’s comments. He has some points. Alabama should definitely have a chip on their shoulder, and that’s a dangerous team. However, the Crimson Tide have a lot of the same concerns as Georgia and more. Quarterback play – outside of Bryce Young – has been inconsistent. The defense has had its problems. Georgia – like Alabama – has questions, but the Bulldogs are as equipped to answer them as anyone. Maybe more on all this later…
Beefer2269 has our last question and it’s about the secondary. He says, “Palmer, is it your understanding that Tykee Smith has locked down STAR or is there any chance Joenel Aguero could overtake him or possible he overtakes Bullard (at safety) and Bullard returns to STAR? Also, as of today, name your top three candidates in order for CB2?”
I think Joenel Aguero has as good of a chance as anyone to contribute in the secondary. However, that may be something that comes with time. He’s not a Malaki Starks type where he could come in and start right away, and Georgia doesn’t need that. Aguero is going to get developed, and it’s a benefit that the Bulldogs have Tykee Smith and Javon Bullard as experienced players that have cross trained and can be versatile in how Kirby Smart and company use them.
As for CB2, I’ll go with: Nyland Green, Daylen Everette and then Julian Humphrey. Green’s experience in the system gives him a little bit of an advantage in my eyes, but this is one that’ll be a) rotating, b) game to game and c) decided on the field.
