NC State in top 2 for Ronnie Royal III following official visit

Going into his NC State official visit, Ronnie Royal III was hesitant. He had never been to campus, so this was his first time truly experiencing the Wolfpack.
From playing basketball with the current players to meeting with head coach Dave Doeren, the three-star athlete took a comprehensive look at what life would be like with the program. He left campus impressed.
NC State sits firmly in a top-two with Boston College— the program he officially visited last week.
“They’re even with Boston College right now,” Royal said. “I’m still trying to decide.”
Royal said the trip was great. He spent a lot of time with the coaches, and he said he could play safety, nickel and even some cornerback with the Wolfpack. Overall, the trip improved NC State’s standing in his recruitment and helped him build stronger bonds with the staff.
“At first, I didn’t even know if I wanted to go to NC State because I had never been, but I knew they were a school recruiting me hard,” Royal said. “I knew what they needed me for, but now I understand why they need me…”
The atmosphere of the program felt comfortable, and the defensive back said the Wolfpack could be a good fit for him.
“It really did feel like home,” Royal said. “They treated me like I was at home.”
Wolfpack safety Devan Boykin hosted Royal, and the class of 2024 prospect meshed with the current players and recruits. He said playing basketball with the players and going out to eat were the highlights of the visit.
“They were really cool, really nice, really outgoing, just really straight-up,” Royal said. “They wanted me to feel like I was at home, and it definitely did.”
Moving forward, the defensive back mentioned that he could schedule additional visits but did not have any planned yet. He also shared that he plans on making a decision soon.
“At some point in June,” Royal said.
Until he makes that decision, Royal hopes to improve his relationships with both staffs. The defensive back said he has answered all the questions he has about NC State.
He also holds offers from South Carolina, Florida State and others. The On3 Industry Ranking considers Royal the No. 407 prospect in the country, the No. 18 athlete and the No. 22 recruit in Alabama.
NC State holds two defensive back commits in the 2024 class— one from three-star cornerback Asaad Brown II and another from three-star safety Brody Barnhardt.
