NC State Newsstand: Wolfpack loses key quality control assistants to Marshall

NC State Newsstand: Wolfpack loses key quality control assistants to Marshall

When NC State defensive coordinator Tony Gibson departed Raleigh to become Marshall’s head coach, there was an uncertainty on how many Wolfpack assistants and staff members he would take with him.

As it turned out, Gibson took a pair of NC State’s quality control assistants to become full-time on-field coaches at Marshall, according to FootballScoop. Defensive quality control coach Jake Ellsworth, who worked with the Pack’s linebackers, will be the Thundering Herd’s linebackers coach, while special teams quality control Jackson White will be Marshall’s special teams coordinator.

Ellsworth spent five seasons at NC State, while White was on the Pack’s staff for three seasons. While both were integral parts of the Wolfpack’s coaching staff, White had a critical hand in the program’s special teams success over the past three years.

White, a Marshall graduate, was key in multiple specialists development at NC State, including long snapper Joe Shimko, and placekickers Christopher Dunn and Brayden Narveson. Shimko won the 2023 Patrick Mannelly Award, given to the best long snapper in college football, while Dunn won the 2022 Lou Groza Award and Narveson set the Wolfpack record with a 57-yard field goal.

Now, White will be in his first coordinator role just five years removed from serving as Marshall’s field goal holder while he was also a reserve quarterback.

In addition to Ellsworth and White, Gibson added former NC State assistant director of player personnel Quint Cottingham to his staff as Marshall’s General Manager.

Quote of the day

Pack men’s basketball blew a 14-point lead in a 70-67 loss at Virginia. Coach Kevin Keatts believed his team still has to learn how to play with a lead as it “relaxed” in the second half.

“I think it was a mentality,” Keatts said as to why the ball stuck on the perimeter in the second half. “This is a new group. … We’re playing well together and you look out there and some of your better guys aren’t scoring the basketball. Now, it’s like, ‘Hey, I’ve got a 12-14 point lead, let me go score.’ That’s the wrong formula against this team, this program in this building.”
