Believe it or not, WKU has a winning record in last 10 games against Kentucky WBB

If it weren’t for the fact that Western Kentucky is an in-state team, Saturday’s game would probably just be like any other game on the non-conference part of the schedule, but there’s another thing that separates the Lady Toppers from the average non-conference opponent.

Generally, unless Kentucky is playing a major conference opponent, those non-conference games aren’t too much to sweat about. Sometimes — like against Purdue Fort Wayne and Belmont — Kentucky may struggle, but they almost always end up coming out on top. However, that same sentiment can’t be said about WKU.

As a matter of fact, the Lady Toppers not only have a two-game winning streak over Kentucky, but they’ve also won six of the last 10 meetings between the two programs. The all-time series is evenly split at 14 wins apiece.

In Matthew Mitchell’s first season at Kentucky (2007-08), Kentucky lost to WKU 78-74 in overtime. The following year, the Cats would make the trip to Bowling Green just to lose yet again to the Lady Toppers, this time a 66-57 loss. The two schools haven’t met since then.

The good news for Kentucky, however, is that WKU is just 5-9 in the series when playing on the road. While WKU may be 9-2 this season, they haven’t played a power conference team yet. The closest team to that is Oregon State, and even then, they lost to the Beavers 80-58.

Kenny Brooks will look to change history for the better when the Cats and Lady Toppers meet in Lexington.
