Newsstand: Notre Dame assistant reportedly interviews for MAC head coach position
Deland McCullough was a home run hire for Notre Dame back in Feb. 2022, and he’s had future head coach written all over him for quite some time. Could this be the offseason where he becomes one?
According to Football Scoop’s John Brice, the Ohio Bobcats interviewed McCullough for their head coach position that is vacant due to Tim Albin leaving his post to take over at Charlotte. There are two in-house candidates that Ohio is considering according to Brice and a number of other coaches who the Bobcats’ athletic director has interviewed.
McCullough, who is in his third season at Notre Dame, added associate head coach to his job title this year, which certainly came with a significant salary increase.
McCullough is originally from Pittsburgh and played college football at Miami University. The former running back totaled 4,854 yards and 37 touchdowns from scrimmage over his four-year collegiate career and was the 1992 MAC Freshman of the Year. He ran for a total of 4,368 yards, which was a school record at the time and ended his career as a three-time All-MAC selection. He began his career at the college coaching level as an intern for the RedHawks.
McCullough would be the Irish’s third straight running backs coach to take a head coach position if he is indeed to leave. Lance Taylor (Western Michigan) and Autry Denson (Charleston Southern) became head coaches immediately after their respective times in South Bend.
