Lane Kiffin compares price tag of transfer portal players to high school recruits

Lane Kiffin compares price tag of transfer portal players to high school recruits

With it time for talent acquisition in college football between signing day this week and the opening of the portal next week, what’s the going rate for players in comparison between recruits and transfers?

Lane Kiffin answered that during his press conference on Wednesday following National Signing Day. He said that the prices and numbers between the two differ and fluctuate depending on several different aspects.

“It varies by everything,” Kiffin said.

However, with the future of the sport having revenue sharing as part of it, Kiffin knows what the market is about to look like in the transfer portal.

Kiffin expects this new money for programs to use will lead many of them to paying whatever it takes for them to add players that they want or need. That’s going to lead to the prices in the portal to escalate even higher than anyone has even seen to this point.

“Whatever it’s worth, obviously, once the revenue share was coming and now that people know, even though they don’t technically have the money right now? They’re going to operate like they do in this portal,” Kiffin explained. “I think you’re going to see, you know, outrageous prices in this portal. It’s great for players but I think you’re going to see guys get paid way more than you can ever imagine because now everybody has this money that they’ll have coming in.”

“Again, there’s no structured system. It’s not like the NFL where people really, you know, have got great general managers and have this nailed how to do it,” added Kiffin. “You’re going to have people that say, ‘Okay, well, we’ve got to get a player so here’s the market value but we’re just going to go pay double’, you know, or some donor is going to jump in. Or a coach can be on a hot seat and, you know, overpay a player.”

Everything comes at a cost, including in college athletics now when it comes to recruiting. Even so, the cost of transfers in this upcoming cycle, as compared to prospects or even portal additions in years past, is something that Kiffin knows will be that much more expensive now.

“These portal guys are going to make unbelievable amounts of money,” said Kiffin. “That’s just my opinion and what I think is already being floated out there to these kids, what I already know is being floated out there.”
