Dabo Swinney reveals ‘hilarious’ Fran Brown FaceTime following Syracuse upset of Miami
Clemson entered this weekend needing Syracuse to beat Miami to make the ACC Championship, regardless of the result of its game. So even after falling 17-14 to South Carolina, the Tigers still had a slim chance if the Orange could manage to pull off the upset.
The chaos fell into place as Syracuse held on for a 42-38 defeat of the Hurricanes to shake up both the conference title game and College Football Playoff race. Orange coach Fran Brown knew exactly what it meant in terms of Clemson’s hopes for both, and made a call to Tigers coach Dabo Swinney.
“That was wild,” Swinney said after the fact. “Put that in my memoir one day. That was a first. He was hilarious on the FaceTime call. …I can’t really repeat what he said. It was kind of colorful but hilarious.”
It didn’t look like things would fall Syracuse’s way early as Miami jumped out to a 21-0 lead early in the second quarter. The Hurricanes looked well on their way to an easy win before the Orange sprung to life and scored a couple of touchdowns to make it 21-14 at halftime.
Syracuse continued to mount its comeback and scored in three plays to open the third quarter and tie the game at 21. It would later take its first lead of the game when Devin Grant returned a fumble 56 yards for a touchdown late in the quarter to go up 35-28.
Miami would come back and tie the game again, but the Orange answered with another touchdown to go up for good. That sealed the fate for the Hurricanes and sent the Clemson to the ACC title game.
Dabo Swinney’s phone began to blow up with notifications with people informing him of the result after the fact, but Fran Brown was the last person he expected to hear from. He was pleasantly surprised with the call and now will get to work getting his team ready for the task ahead.
The Tigers face SMU next week with the winner punching its ticket to the College Football Playoff. It marks their eight appearance in the ACC Championship in the past 10 seasons, and they won all seven of those previous games.
Kickoff for the ACC title game is set for 8 p.m. ET on Saturday at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte.
