Louisville leads Kentucky by 20 at halftime of the Governor’s Cup. Gross.
The first half of the 36th running of the Governor’s Cup was a disaster for Kentucky. An absolute disaster. As the teams go their separate ways for intermission, the Cardinals lead 20-0 in Lexington, and it could be even worse for the Wildcats on Senior Day.
Before the action picks back up, a chronological recap of the key plays behind UK’s shutout:
Kentucky turned it over on a promising opening drive
The Wildcats received the opening kickoff, setting up Cutter Boley‘s immediate debut as Kentucky’s new starting quarterback. The first drive went well for a couple of plays: three runs by Jamarion Wilcox for a quick 28 yards. However, Wilcox was stripped on his third run for the game’s first turnover.
Louisville took over at midfield a minute and a half into the game, only to go three-and-out on its first possession and punt it back to UK.
Louisville struck first with a touchdown
The Cardinals got on the board first, driving 60 yards in nine plays for the game’s first touchdown. Running back Isaac Brown did most of the work on Louisville’s second possession. He carried it six times for 29 yards, including the one-yard rush into the end zone for six.
Cutter Boley intercepted; Louisville added a field goal off the turnover
After trading a couple of punts, things got worse for Kentucky when Cutter Boley threw his first interception in Kroger Field. Boley was looking for Dane Key at midfield but Louisville’s Tamarion McDonald picked off the errant throw. Kentucky offensive lineman Jalen Farmer tacked on more yards for the Cards with a personal foul after the play.
Three plays later, Tyler Shough hit Chris Bell in the corner of the end zone. However, Bell was called for illegal touching, so the down was replayed. Kentucky got the following third-down stop, and Louisville settled for a field goal to go up 10-0 in Lexington.
A 58-yard Louisville touchdown run closed the door on any hope
Up 10-0, Louisville didn’t waste any time adding to Big Blue Nation’s misery on its next series. Duke Watson ran 58 yards on the first play from scrimmage to put the Cards up even bigger. At 17-0 with 11 minutes still to go in the second quarter, some Kentucky fans had seen enough and hit the exits early.
Louisville immediately got back in scoring position but showed mercy with a field goal
Louisville nearly added another touchdown on its next series. The Cards drove 70 yards down to the three-yard line but couldn’t punch it in for six on three tries. Jeff Brohm could’ve gone for the kill on fourth down but elected to kick the short field goal instead. Thank you, Jeff.
