Deion Sanders questions why he doesn’t have college football award named after him

Deion Sanders had a funny question as to why there wasn’t a college football award named after him, when talking about Travis Hunter.

Hunter is in contention for numerous awards, such as the Heisman, Jim Thorpe and Fred Biletnikoff awards. He does play receiver and corner by the way.

But when reeling off how good his player was, Sanders addressed what it meant to him to win awards for his accomplishments in college football. Then, you know, asked why there wasn’t a Prime award.

“What it meant to me, it just told y’all who I was,” Sanders said of winning the Thorpe award. “That’s it. I knew who I was. I was just waiting on y’all to give me the darn trophy to stabilize who I was. Travis is the best defensive player and the best offensive player in the country, so if that stabilize and authenticate who he is, so let it be. But I don’t see anybody better. I don’t see anyone projected better. The scouts will tell you. Everybody will tell you, who knows this game of football.

“So I mean, he should win the Thorpe, Biletnikoff, the Jerry Rice, the Prime Award. He should win every darn award (they) got. Matter of fact, why don’t they have (an award after me) Rick? Wouldn’t it be good if a player that played for me win the Prime? They should, the best corner in in college football, that should be called The Prime.”

A Prime award named after Sanders? Honestly, this writer is on board with that. Granted, the Jim Thorpe award is the one awarded to the top defensive back in the sport.

It’s tough beat considering the stature of the athlete he was. Sanders was an electric player so perhaps the most electric player gets awarded the Prime award. Why not?

If Sanders can coach players like Hunter, who play both ways, why not have other players try it out at Colorado?

“Well, a lot of coaches lie, and they tell them, I’m gonna give you the opportunity to play on both sides of the ball, and we never see it,” Sanders said. “First of all, I don’t lie. Second of all, I did it, so I know it’s doable. I know it can be allowed if a young man has that type of talent.“Now, some of these guys, you were like that in high school, but you ain’t like that in college. You really need to focus on one thing, but we’re fortunate to have three guys. Tyler [Brown] hasn’t played defensive yet, but he practices defense every day. Tyler Brown is one of the guys poised to start on the defense next year. He’s so talented; he gives us a lot on the special team to Travis.”
