NC State basketball made seven additions from the transfer portal. North Carolina A&T guard Kam Woods was the seventh to pick the Pack, announcing his commitment Sunday.
Here is an analysis of Woods potential impact.
Kam Woods in 2022-23
This was Woods’ third school in three years.
He began his career at Troy, where he averaged 10.3 points per game as a part-time starter on a squad that went 10-15. Woods then headed to a junior college (Northwest Florida State) before enrolling last summer at North Carolina A&T.
Woods shined as a scorer for an Aggies’ squad that went 13-19 overall and 8-10 in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA). He averaged 17.3 points, 4.2 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.6 steals per game. He led A&T in scoring and assists and was second in steals.
Woods was very much a volume scorer. He attempted 460 shots last season, and he was the only player on the North Carolina A&T roster to take at least 400 field goals. Woods tried 246 three-pointers, and none of his teammates shot more than 155. (Woods made 83 threes, or 83.7 percent.)
North Carolina A&T’s second and third games of the season were road dates at NCAA Tournament participants Iowa and Iowa State, and he scored 18 and 17 points, respectively, in lopsided losses, shooting a combined 11 of 30 from the field, including 5 of 15 on threes. Woods did struggle with turnovers, committing a total of 10 in the two games.
Against eventual NCAA Tournament No. 1 seed Houston, Woods had 26 points after making 10 of 18 shots, including 3 of 8 threes, and finished with 26 points with only a pair of turnovers. In conference action, Woods had 30 points on 12-of-20 shooting, including 6 of 12 beyond the arc and added six assists with three turnovers in a home loss to Charleston, who narrowly lost to eventual national runner-up San Diego State in the round of 64 at the NCAA Tournament.
Transfer Portal Rankings
On3’s basketball transfer portal rankings had Woods rated the No. 51 shooting guard available in the transfer portal.
The Fit For NC State Basketball
NC State basketball fans are fully aware that under head coach Kevin Keatts, guards have extensive freedom on offense. Thus, on the surface, Kam Woods might be a good fit for Keatts’ philosophy. He clearly showcased a penchant for shooting with North Carolina A&T.
Listed at 6-foot-2, 185 pounds, Woods would be undersized for a shooting guard. The question is could Woods provide some depth and minutes at point guard, or is he strictly a scorer?
The jump in competition will be another adjustment for Woods, but he showed he could score against good teams in his one season for the Aggies. Between the return of Casey Morsell and addition of Arizona State grad transfer DJ Horne and Butler guard Jayden Taylor, the addition of Woods should provide plenty of perimeter scoring firepower.
