NASCAR fans want Mike Joy to retire from the Fox broadcast booth

During and after the Sonoma Cup Series race, some NASCAR fans were online calling for Mike Joy to retire from the booth. For more than two decades, Joy has been the voice of NASCAR on FOX. He is as synonymous with the brand as any other figure. That hasn’t stopped some from ragging on him, though.

While it doesn’t seem Mike Joy will be going anywhere any time soon, there were more than a few detractors on Twitter. As Joy would call them, “keyboard warriors.” With another outcry against the number of commercials during the race and a personal callout towards him, I’m sure the broadcaster is more steadfast in his rivalry against the keyboard warriors.

On the track, Martin Truex Jr. came away with the win, but there were folks that couldn’t get over their opinion of Joy’s broadcasting.

With Sonoma being the last race of the year broadcast on FOX, there were those that were excited for the NBC crew. While Dale Jr. and the gang are great at what they do, and fans believe FOX has its own issues with the production of the races.

This fan is embracing the change coming up after the off week.

Mike Joy misremembers Tony Stewart’s 2016 Sonoma win

With all of the races that Mike Joy has covered over the years, there’s a lot of information. I’m sure there are times when races bleed together. I’m only 25 years old and I get winners mixed up for races I wrote about every now and then.

However, Joy did misremember a very memorable finish at Sonoma. Tony Stewart battled with Denny Hamlin in 2016 for the win. The FOX broadcaster remembered it as Martin Truex Jr. instead of Hamlin.

While Joy misremembered the last-lap finish between Stewart and Hamlin, you can almost give him some benefit of the doubt. Truex was fifth in that race, although he wasn’t in contention for the win at the end. Hamlin moved Stewart with a bump and run and then Stewart came back and moved Hamlin.

Some found it to be unforgivable.

Working in the booth every week from February to June is tough. Mike Joy has put in decades of work and is a great figure in the sport. Mistakes happen, but there are those that feel it is time for a change.
