South Carolina Gamecocks survive season opener against Michigan Wolverines

In a closer-than-expected matchup at the Hall of Fame Series in Las Vegas, the Gamecocks took some of Michigan’s best punches but emerged victorious. South Carolina didn’t play its best overall game, especially down low. However, the Gamecocks did enough to win against a talented team that plays a unique style.

After the game, Coach Dawn Staley wasn’t thrilled with her team’s overall effort. She was pleased, though, that they overcame some adversity and got the W.

Chloe Kitts had a double-double (19 points, 14 rebounds).

Result: South Carolina won 68-62

South Carolina Gamecocks win comfortably over NC State Wolfpack

The Gamecocks were better in the post against NC State as they won the rebounding battle 40-25. They still allowed the Wolfpack to have some long scoring stretches, but even with those tough periods, South Carolina won the game pretty comfortably.

Te-Hina Paopao and MiLaysia Fulwiley carried the day. The backcourt duo combined to shoot 18-30 (4-10) for 41 points.

Post player Ashlyn Watkins returned to the team after the Michigan win, but Chloe Kitts faced a one-game suspension over an academic policy issue that caused the team to remain shorthanded down low for the NC State game.

Result: South Carolina won 71-57.
