On3 top-30 defensive back Wardell Mack already kicked off a busy June with an official visit to Florida State.
Mack is set to officially visit Florida next (June 16-18) and round out June with a return trip to Texas. The Marrero (La.) John Ehret four-star DB will be on hand for the Longhorns’ biggest recruiting weekend of the summer on June 23-25.
Throughout the fall and into the spring, the top-rated DB in The Boot has frequented LSU, which holds a commanding lead on the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine, including a pick from this analyst. Midway through June, there’s been some buzz about two other contenders gaining steam in his recruitment.
Both the Gators and the Seminoles have taken a leap forward with the 6-foot-1, 175-pound hybrid defensive back, who is coveted at safety and also cornerback by various programs. Mack officially visited Florida State to open up June. New Orleans legends Pat Surtain and David Johnson are both heavily involved n Mack’s recruitment and the addition to Surtain has really caught Mack’s attention in “a big way,” one source told On3.
The No. 28-rated player in the On300 for the 2024 class has been to Tallahassee twice since Surtain’s arrival.
There has been even more buzz about the emergence of the Gators with former LSU defensive backs coach and Louisiana native Corey Raymond leading the charge. Raymond, who has a longstanding connection with Mack dating back to last spring, finally got the blue-chip defender on campus in April and he’ll return to The Swamp this weekend for his official visit.
Sources are pointing to Florida as a team with a lot of momentum entering Mack’s visit back to The Swamp this coming weekend. The Gators are sitting with only two DB committed to their current haul and Raymond is making “a strong push” to make Mack his top cornerback in the group.
Mack wraps up June with another visit back to Texas, which has long been a staple in his recruitment. Terry Joseph signed Derek Williams out of Louisiana in last year’s cycle. The Longhorns have three big in-state DB high on their board, but they’re also a team to monitor.
LSU last got Mack on campus for the spring game in April. He is eyeing an official visit in December and currently remains undecided about a timeline for a decision.
“I pushed it back a little bit,” Mack told On3 last month. “I want to see how everyone’s DB plays. It’s one thing to talk about development; it’s another thing to see it.”
“It opened my eyes a lot,” he added, on his spring visits out-of-state.
