Rumor Mill: Sooners Refresh Relationship with 5-Star Williams Nwaneri

On Oklahoma’s first big visit weekend of the summer there was no player people were watching more closely than five-star Williams Nwaneri. The 6-foot-6, 260-pound pass rusher from Lee’s Summit (Mo.) Lee’s Summit North got to spend a lot of time around the Sooners staff.

With Oklahoma in heated competition with Tennessee as well as Texas A&M and following a recent ‘eye-opening’ trip to Georgia the Sooners had this chance to reaffirm a long-time relationship. Since early on the Sooners have made a real priority of Nwaneri and this trip was about showing him the family bond he had in Norman.

While things have been led by Miguel Chavis it’s really been a staff-wide effort to recruit the nation’s No. 2 overall player in the On3 recruiting rankings. Todd Bates and Brent Venables have done an outstanding job building a bond with Nwaneri from the top down.

According to multiple sources refreshing these bonds seemed to reinforce that there is no staff he’s closer with than the Sooners.

“(Oklahoma) did everything that had to be done this weekend,” a source said. “It’s not a done deal or anything but he knows the staff that’s been with him all along and what he’d mean to (Oklahoma).”

But it’s not just the staff that Nwaneri has a real bond with over the weekend he hung out with a number of players. Most notably among them are a pair of fellow Kansas City area stars that chose Oklahoma in the 2023 class. One, former teammate, Cayden Green and the other being fellow five-star defensive end P.J. Adebawore.

“He loves those guys, there’s a real comfort there,” another source said.

Nwaneri is visiting Tennessee this weekend followed by Missouri and has a visit set for Oregon in September.

Sooners Visits Still Going On

But for all of the visit weekend chatter and news, the Sooners aren’t done with their work.

That’s because they will be hosting Oklahoma’s 2022 player of the year, Midwest City Carl Albert running back Xavier Robinson starting on Monday. Oklahoma is battling Iowa State and Notre Dame, along with Oklahoma State for the powerful back.

Later this week Oklahoma will also host 2024 running back offers Caden Durham and Taylor Tatum. But there are indications that if Oklahoma could land three running backs it’s a possibility they’d consider. That consideration comes from three very different players who seem to compliment each other well and may be too talented to pass up on.
