Newsstand: Dusty May speech before Michigan win over Cleveland State — ‘we’re gonna play fast’

Tweets Of The Day

Michigan basketball head coach Dusty May gave a fiery speech to his team ahead of the 101-53 win over Cleveland State Monday night, as revealed by a video on the program’s official Twitter / X account.

“Offensively, we’re gonna play fast,” May said to his team.
“We’re gonna cut fast, we’re gonna run fast, we’re gonna crash fast. We’re gonna fight like crazy for catches. We’re gonna be ball strong, 4-4-4 drill and then shot fakes. We’re gonna get in the paint, shot fake — the game slows down.

“Defensively, we’re gonna play fast defensively. We’re gonna be suspicious and alert at all times. Look around, taking in information. And then we’re gonna finish possessions and then we’re gonna do it again.”

Michigan had 22 assists on 39 made buckets, sharing the ball well. The Maize and Blue put up 101 points and shot over 68 percent from the field, the second best mark in a game in program history.

“As far as our unselfishness and sharing the ball, I would grade us at an A-,” May said. “We have guys that enjoy passing the ball. They’ve always taken pride in playing the game the right way, and that’s not always easy to do when you build a lead and you get a lot of attention for the numbers.

“For our team, I don’t think anyone was hunting numbers. They were simply trying to take what the game gave them, and that’s a good sign. As long as we don’t change, then we should be able to score on most nights.”

Michigan senior quarterback Davis Warren sits down with NBC.

“To feel that connection with them – that’s answered my ‘why’ question…it’s been so special and that’s why I want to keep helping.”

The first version of the College Football Playoff rankings were released Tuesday night. Michigan, of course, was not included, since the Wolverines already have four losses on the season for the first time since 2020. Michigan’s next opponent — Indiana — is in, though, sitting at No. 8. If the CFP started today, the Hoosiers would be the No. 9 seed taking on No. 8 seed Tennessee.

Quote Of The Day

“It’s just a testament to my dedication. Just trying to get my body right, keep my body right throughout the season. I feel like I’ve done a great job of that, and I’m not falling off or anything or being lackadaisical on game days. It’s a testament to the coaches and also a testament to me to keep my body right.”
