WATCH: Mark Pope, Kentucky players recap season-opening win over Wright State

Kentucky’s 103-62 season-opening win over Wright State had a fairytale-like quality to it, right down to the 41-point margin, which matches Mark Pope’s jersey number at Kentucky. However, there was a hiccup in the script when he sat down with the media for his postgame press conference, the chair set way too low for his 6’10” frame.

“This seat feels super short. Can you guys see me? Alright. Well, I like it. I feel smaller!”

Pope went on to praise his team for their “intentional” start to the game, which got the ball rolling on a dominant performance. While he wants to put off reflecting on the win until later, he admitted the fact that Kentucky won by 41 was “really sweet.” He was happy to move on to questions about his players, specifically Amari Williams and Otega Oweh, who shined in their debuts, Williams notching his first double-double as a Cat and Oweh leading all scorers with 21 points. His quote about Williams being “400 lbs. of solid steel just racing down the floor” is a great one.

Pope even talked about how attending a referee symposium changed his relationship with officials, another example of how different Kentucky Basketball postgame press conferences are these days. Take a look.

Koby Brea, Williams, and Oweh also chatted with reporters about their first official win as Wildcats. Brea broke down the highlight everyone is talking about, the no-look pass from Kerr Kriisa for a three, one of four from him on the night. Williams talked about what makes Kentucky’s offense special, and Oweh shared what’s going through his mind as he drives the lane. All three discussed the significance of Kentucky winning by 41, and their happiness for their coach.
