Michigan State defensive line coach Diron Reynolds is continuing to expand his recruiting board in the 2024 class, extending an offer to defensive lineman Tyler Simmons of Windermere (FL) Preparatory Academy. Simmons is the son of Brian Simmons, a former All-American for North Carolina. The older Simmons, now the coach at Windermere Prep, was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in the 1998 NFL Draft.
The 6-foot-4, 260-pounder has seen his recruitment explode with offers from South Carolina, Miami (FL), Indiana, Kansas, North Carolina State, Virginia, and others all coming since the beginning of May. Stanford, Northwestern, Harvard, Princeton, and others have also offered.
Michigan State joined the race on June 9, after scouting him in person during the evaluation period in May.
“One of the coaches came to my school and told me they were going to keep an eye on me,” Simmons told SpartanMag.com. “I was not talking to them that much before the offer, though.”
Simmons took an official visit to Northwestern (June 2-4), and will take another to Stanford (June 23-25). Academics are a huge factor in his decision-making process. The Wildcats lead his Recruiting Prediction Machine (RPM) at 54.1 percent.
Jason’s take:
Michigan State could use a pair of high school defensive tackles in the 2024 class, after not signing anyone at the position in 2023. Four-star freshman Jalen Thompson (6-3. 235) was recruited on the edge, but has the frame to slide inside in the future.
Redshirt freshman Alex Vansumeran made strides this spring, as returning contributor Simeon Barrow enters his redshirt Junior season in 2023.
Former Penn State transfer Ken Talley (6-3, 230), is also a redshirt freshman. At his size, he could also slide inside for depth if needed. As of now, the three are the only underclassman defensive tackles in the program.
Michigan State will also push for a visit from four-star Joseph Jonah-Ajonye of Conroe (TX). He will visit Oklahoma and Georgia in June. He is trending towards Georgia ahead of the official visit.
The Spartans also made the top four for three-star Caden Brown of New York City (NY) Erasmus Hall, along with Rutgers, Penn State and Syracuse. He is planning to official visit with each finalist.
