Winners and Losers: Kansas State lands another significant transfer

Winners and Losers: Kansas State lands another significant transfer

We wrap up the week was in the world of Kansas State sports and college athletics.

WINNERS

1) TANG: Folks were starting to get nervous, but the Kansas State coaching staff never blinked and continue to prove that there is no reason to doubt them. Jerome Tang and company defeated Texas Tech, Alabama and Kentucky for the services of Creighton transfer Arthur Kaluma. After having landed he and Tylor Perry, that is two top 20 transfer additions for K-State.

2) 2025 CLASS: We’re discovering that, just like 2023, the 2025 cycle could be an immensely talented one in the state of Kansas. Will Kansas State capitalize on it again? Two that were just offered are strong leans to the Wildcats in Linkon Cure and Bryson Hayes.

3.) ROBBINS: A congratulations is in store for Grant Robbins, as the K-State men’s golf boss was named the Big 12 Coach of the Year.

4.) FROGS: It’s been a great year for the Wildcats, but another school enjoying a lot of wins in athletics is TCU. The Horned Frogs have advanced to the College World Series after sweeping Indiana State in the NCAA Super Regional in Fort Worth.

5) GENE: Speaking of coaching awards, how about an acknowledgment for Kansas State athletic director Gene Taylor? Chris Klieman didn’t win Big 12 Coach of the Year because of Sonny Dykes, but he was a finalist for several national ones after winning the conference. Robbins and Tang were both named coach of the year in the league. That is department-wide success.

According to ESPN’s transfer portal rankings, K-State is the only program in the country to land 2 top-20 ranked players in the entire portal. If you use CBS transfer portal rankings, West Virginia and @KStateMBB are the only programs in America to land 2 top-20 ranked dudes.

LOSERS

1) KENTUCKY: Unless a surprise happens and Antonio Reeves does not enter the transfer portal, John Calipari only has seven players on his roster. Five of them will be true freshmen, too. The latest setback was falling short to K-State for Kaluma.

2) BOYCOTT: College football players are being encouraged to boycott the new EA Sports video game by not opting into the agreement that would give each player $500 to relinquish their name and likeness for inclusion in the game. As intelligent folks have pointed out, only a couple players are substantial enough to benefit by making such a move. The $500 payment is more than fair.

3.) JAYHAWKS: Lyndon High offensive lineman Kaedin Massey electing to replace a visit to Kansas with one to Ole Miss is equal parts funny and significant. Kansas State is likely facing the stiffest competition for him from Nebraska and Oklahoma.

4.) MCCASLAND: The Texas Tech head coach is having a tough time challenging his coaching friends from K-State on the recruiting trail. Perry and Kaluma both picked the Wildcats over Grant McCasland and the Red Raiders. Not only that, they saw Tyrin Lawrence choose to return to Vanderbilt.

5.) BAYLOR: He might be as close as it gets to the Kansas State staff, but it wasn’t a good week for Scott Drew and the Bears. They will bounce back and figure it out, just like the Wildcats, but allowing Olivier Nkamhoua to slip away to Michigan and losing the visit from Grant Nelson was a rough turn of events.
