Mike Elko points out assistant Tommy Moffitt’s past at LSU after victory over Tigers

After holding steady for most of the game and staying within striking distance of LSU, Texas A&M rallied and pulled past the Tigers for a key SEC win over the weekend. And Aggies head coach Mike Elko gave a special shoutout to strength and conditioning coach Tommy Moffitt.

And it’s all the more meaningful as Moffitt joined the Aggies this offseason after spending more than two decades in Baton Rouge. Elko, for certain, noticed the difference on Saturday night.

“Let me word it this way just so I’m careful: I thought it was very ironic that Coach Moffitt was once at LSU,” Elko said on his weekly coaches radio show. “He had the boys a little bit fired up this week, and then in the fourth quarter from a physical standpoint it looked as though we ran away (with) it. We’ll just leave it alone at that.”

Against the Tigers at home on Saturday, Texas A&M struggled along for the first half. Then, a quarterback change sparked a comeback.

And Elko felt that the work done by Moffitt and the strength and conditioning staff since he arrived in January started to show up in the 31-6 second half.

Elko likely thought it was ironic, too, because of Moffitt’s long and storied history at LSU.

Moffitt joined the LSU program in 2000 and spent more than two decades there, leaving the program in 2021. He served as a strength and conditioning coach for a trio of national championship teams — 2003, 2007 and 2019 — and worked with countless NFL draft picks. He was also a part of five SEC championship teams with LSU. He had previously worked as a strength and conditioning coach at Tennessee, working with the likes of Peyton Manning and winning another SEC title in 1998.

So when it was the Aggies flying around late in the game, taking it to the Tigers in the final minutes, Elko couldn’t help but appreciate the work Moffitt has done — and the irony of when it truly started to show.
