No, Penn State is not retiring Olu Fashanu’s number Saturday, despite what Aaron Rodgers said

Penn State is not retiring Olu Fashanu’s No. 74 jersey this Saturday when the No. 3 Nittany Lions host No. 4 Ohio State, a source told Blue-White Illustrated. It was a question that needed to be asked and answered after New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers said that was happening on Amazon Prime following the AFC East team’s 21-13 win over the Houston Texans on Thursday Night Football.

“Congrats to Olu, getting his number retired this weekend at Penn State,” Rodgers said. “I’ve been out 20 years at Cal, no number retired. He’s been out four months, getting his number retired.”

That is not the case, though. Penn State is not planning to retire any numbers this weekend. Only one number, John Cappelletti’s No. 22, has been retired by the program at this point in time. And there is no indication that any others will join that one anytime soon.

Fashanu, who the Jets are more or less trying to redshirt this season as they prepare him to be their left tackle of the future, was rushed into action at guard in the second half. He has never played the positon before. But, he settled in and performed OK after initially committing a costly holding penalty that wiped out a long Rodgers scramble for a first down. The Jets would eventually go ahead anyway on that positon after Garrett Wilson made a spectacular diving grab in the back of the end zone.

Fashanu started two games so far this year at right tackle. The first-round pick out of Penn State has also played special teams in every Jets game this season.
