Quinn Ewers shares what Red River Rivalry means to him

Quinn Ewers shares what Red River Rivalry means to him

The Longhorns were able to get revenge in The Cotton Bowl this weekend following a down-to-the-wire loss to rival Oklahoma last season. With Texas defeating the Sooners in a dominant 34-3 victory in the 120th edition of the Red River Rivalry.

Saturday’s win also met redemption for quarterback Quinn Ewers. A Texas native who opened up about the personal significance of one of college football’s most storied rivalries.

“It’s good to come here and be able to play in this game in general, and just the opportunity that we are all given to come up here and play against them at a neutral site,” Ewers said after the game. “And it’s been fun the past three years and I’m super glad to be 2-1, over five hundred, in the game for sure.”

The Longhorns are 2-1 against Oklahoma with Ewers under center as their starting quarterback. A dominant player against the Sooners who’s helped play a key role in Texas outscoring Oklahoma 83-3 in his two wins against the Crimson and Cream.

“The overall experience and atmosphere is unbeatable. So it’s not hard to get up for this game and we really enjoy the moment,” Ewers added.

Ewers’ last Red River Shootout was a disappointing one, turning the ball over three times in a heartbreaking 34-30 loss to Oklahoma. Where Dillon Gabriel led a five-play, 75-yard game-winning scoring drive in the closing moments of the matchup.

This year, Ewers gets the last laugh. Missing the previous two games with an abdominal injury but returned on Saturday, where he completed 69% of his passes for 199 yards with one touchdown and an interception. As the Longhorns leaned heavily on the run game following a slow start with 177 yards on the ground.

Celebrating with the Golden Hat after a Red River Rivalry game is one of the most cherished traditions in college football. But Ewers and the top-ranked Longhorns can’t celebrate for too long, as they host No. 5 Georgia this weekend in one of the most highly anticipated games of the year.
