Deion Sanders on Travis Hunter: He’s ‘one of the best human beings that I know’
Deion Sanders didn’t hold back the praise of Travis Hunter ahead of Colorado’s game against Kansas State Saturday night.
Hunter, a two-way star, is squarely in the mix for the Heisman Trophy this year. But it’s what he does off the field to prepare himself for greatness in between the white lines.
Sanders practically called Hunter one of one.
“He don’t drink, he don’t smoke, goes right home after practice, study a ton of film, is one of the best human beings that I know,” Sanders said on College GameDay. “We have a race every Saturday morning to see who wakes up first to text one another. And he beat me this morning. He’s like, ‘let’s go, coach.’ I’m like, let’s go, alright. So Travis, he loves the darn game of football.
“And that’s what I love about it. We don’t have to worry about what he’s going to do on Saturday because we already know, and I love every bit of it.”
Travis Hunter is top tier in 2024
Sanders can’t play anymore, just coach. But man, he loves the competition and was even previously asked of who was better: him or Hunter?
“It’s not me against Travis,” Sanders said. “I had my turn, man. You can’t just turn me on and off like a light switch anymore. Travis is everything, it’s his turn now. I want him to have all the accolades, all the praise, all the love, all the attention, all the focus, that he desires. I’ve had my turn.”
A follow up question was asked, wondering if Sanders saw any similarities instead. A quick yes coming from the Colorado head coach, most of the answer was spent discussing the values they share away from football, calling Hunter a “good young man.”
“I see similarities in certain areas,” Sanders said. “Especially away from the game. Especially his demeanor away from the game. I absolutely love it and I love who he is in the game. We don’t smoke, we don’t drink, we’re not profane. Travis is a really, really, really good young man.”
In five games this year, Hunter has 46 catches for 561 yards, six touchdowns, 12.2 yards per catch, 16 total tackles, one tackle for loss, two interceptions, three pass deflections and one forced fumble.
Playing at his best is a recipe for a Colorado win. The Buffaloes will need it against No. 18 Kansas State in Boulder.
