Newsstand: What ACC commissioner Jim Phillips said about Jack Swarbrick stepping down at Notre Dame

Newsstand: What ACC commissioner Jim Phillips said about Jack Swarbrick stepping down at Notre Dame

ACC commissioner Jim Phillips and Notre Dame director of athletics Jack Swarbrick have had a mutually beneficial relationship over the years. All of the Irish’s major team sports outside of hockey and football compete in Phillips’ conference.

Thursday, Phillips had to bid Swarbrick a professional goodbye.

The Irish announced Swarbrick is stepping down from his post as the university’s AD in the first quarter of 2024. Swarbrick, a 1976 economics graduate of Notre Dame, returned to South Bend to be the AD in 2008, replacing Kevin White. Swarbrick was instrumental in striking the deal that led Irish athletics teams to the ACC in 2012.

“Jack is an incredible leader that continues to have an indelible impact on intercollegiate athletics, and we look forward to celebrating him during his final year as the University of Notre Dame Vice President and Athletics Director,” Phillips said in a statement. “Jack and the entire Swarbrick family have been personal friends over the last two decades, and I’m thrilled for them as they look ahead to this next chapter.

Swabrick will be replaced by NBC Sports Chairman Pete Bevacqua, a 1993 graduate of Notre Dame.

“We know he brings a wealth of experience and love for Notre Dame,” Phillips said. “Congratulations to the Swarbrick family, the Bevacqua family and Father John Jenkins and the Notre Dame family on today’s announcement.”

Notre Dame tweets of the day

Hindsight makes this 2020 interview between Swarbrick and Bevacqua feel like a bit of foreshadowing.

Notre Dame has a proud ambassador of all things Fighting Irish in soon-to-be athletics director Pete Bevacqua.

Bevacqua’s praise in this 2020 clip feels genuine and, unironically, Marcus Freeman-like.

It’s all in the Irish family.

“Congratulations to Jack Swarbrick and his family on an incredible career and legacy at Notre Dame! I’m so grateful for Jack’s friendship, mentorship, leadership and vision. His impact on collegiate athletics and at ND is remarkable. On behalf of NDWBB, thank you!”

Quote of the day

“This is a dream come true. With the exception of my family, nothing means more to me than Notre Dame. I don’t have a memory in my lifetime, quite literally, where Notre Dame wasn’t a part of it.”
