Newsstand: Two more Notre Dame players win national weekly awards

Newsstand: Two more Notre Dame players win national weekly awards

One day after Notre Dame senior quarterback Riley Leonard was named the Senior Bowl Offensive Player of the Week for his performance in Week 5 against Louisville, two other Irish were given national honors of their own.

Graduate student defensive tackle Howard Cross III was named the Outland Trophy National Player of the Week, given to the best interior lineman in the country. Sophomore wide receiver Jordan Faison was given the Burlsworth Trophy, which recognizes the most outstanding college football player who began their career as a walk-on.

Cross pressured Louisville seventh-year quarterback Tyler Shough 5 times, and he also made 2 tackles, both of which were credited as defensive stops (tackles that constitute a failure for the offense). Faison caught 2 passes for 12 yards before leaving the game due to injury, but he also made the hit on the Cardinals’ punter that caused the ball to careen toward the goal line in the second quarter.

Freshman safety Kennedy Urlacher picked it up there, and Leonard scored shortly after.

The Irish have a bye in Week 6, but they’re back in action at 3:30 p.m. ET on Oct. 12 against Stanford at Notre Dame Stadium in South Bend. The game will be broadcast on NBC and streamed on Peacock.
