ITB Extra: New On3 Prediction in for Michigan to land key defensive target

ITB Extra: New On3 Prediction in for Michigan to land key defensive target

*** I’ve gone ahead and logged an On3 Recruiting Prediction in for Michigan to land three-star Charlotte (N.C.) West Charlotte linebacker Jaden Smith, who is coming off an unofficial visit to U-M. I previously wrote there were some hurdles to clear, but now, I fully believe he’s a guy that will end up in the class. Smith just released a Top 4 of Michigan, Kentucky, Virginia Tech and USC. The Wolverines have all the momentum right now, and I believe they’ll seal the deal. If he does side with Michigan, he’ll return for a June 23 OV.

*** I had a chance to see Smith live at the Under Armour Charlotte camp this offseason. Smith is right at around 6-foot-3, 195 pounds but can easily add another 20 pounds to his frame. Like Mason Curtis and Cole Sullivan, I would classify Smith as a defensive athlete. Smith showed plus abilities in coverage at the camp and also looked fluid and speedy when going through individual drills. I think he can play a traditional linebacker role, a big safety role and even come off the edge. He’s a project, but there is a lot to like about his ceiling.

*** Does taking Smith affect where things stand with linebacker targets Aaron Chiles and Jeremiah Beasley? The simple answer is no. Again, I really like Smith’s position flexibility and think of him as more of an athlete. Beasley is still trending towards Michigan, and I think the Wolverines will come out on top when he makes his decision this month. I also feel confident with Chiles, who is set to make his official visit on June 23 and will likely make a decision soon after.

*** Smith is slated to make an official visit to Virginia Tech this weekend, but I am not sure if that is still happening. Kentucky was slated to get an official visit on June 16th, but obviously a decision will happen before that trip. USC has always had his attention, but I think distance is a factor there. Smith vibed really well with the Michigan staff over the weekend, including head coach Jim Harbaugh. Development was a key selling point during the trip. Michigan defensive coordinator Jesse Minter also did a fantastic job of showing him the scheme and how he would fit in.
