The Miami Hurricanes are set to host one of their most star-studded official visitor groups in recent years this upcoming weekend, and on the list is Daytona Beach (Fla.) Mainland four-star defensive lineman LJ McCray.
After first visiting Coral Gables in April, the 6-foot-6.5, 260-pound defender was so impressed with what he saw during that time, and with Miami’s continued recruiting push, he decided to lock in an official visits with the Hurricanes.
“They’ve been doing a good job recruiting me, and I enjoyed it last time I went down there on my unofficial,” McCray told CaneSport.
Leading his recruiting efforts has been the Miami trio of head coach Mario Cristobal and defensive line coaches Joe Salave’a and Jason Taylor.
“I’m definitely feeling the love from Miami right now,” McCray said. “They stress a lot that I should be in Miami and that they can really use me. It’s definitely cool hearing that, and it is very meaningful.”
Ahead of the visit, McCray, who is the No. 93 overall prospect in the 2024 class according to the On3 Industry Rankings, is most looking forward to reconnecting with the Miami staff and bringing his family back to Coral Gables.
“I’m really just looking forward to being able to spend time down there and be around the people more,” McCray added.
McCray discusses his busy summer
After taking his first official visit to the University of Florida last weekend, McCray has just begun a busy summer with official visits set with Miami, Georgia, Auburn, and then to Florida State in October.
According to the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine, the Gators are the current favorite to land his commitment, but McCray remains adamant that he is in no rush to commit and wants to see how all his official visits go before making his final decision.
“I don’t think there is one thing I’ll see at a school that’ll make me say this is where I want to be,” McCray said. “I feel like all the schools that I’m visiting are going to have great people and be great places. It’s going to be about how I really feel when I get down to it and finish taking all my official visits. I’ll weigh my options and see what each school has to offer, and then I think I’ll be ready to commit. I’m not in any rush to commit like that.”
CaneSport’s take
McCray will be among a handful of elite defensive linemen visiting Miami this weekend, alongside five-star prospects Dylan Stewart, Colin Simmons and David Stone. With this loaded weekend ahead for the Hurricanes, you could only think they will be pulling out all the stops to impress this group as they look to build their 2024 class.
