More Penn State College Football Playoff projections revealed: Newsstand

Penn State news, notes, and updates for Sept. 18 include more College Football Playoff projections that include the Nittany Lions, headlines of the day, and more. It’s time to dive into Wednesday’s top tweets and headlines about head coach James Franklin’s team and college athletics.

Penn State tweets of the day

We start with more media picks for the inaugural 12-team Playoff. For On3, national college football columnist Jesse Simonton has Penn State taking the No. 9 seed and playing No. 8 Ole Miss on the road in the opening round.

“The Nittany Lions spent the bye week rewatching a frustrating film session against Bowling Green, and now they get to take out some of that anger on an awful Kent State team this weekend,” Simonton writes. “We’ll find out a lot more about James Franklin’s team once the calendar switches to pumpkin carving season next month.”

Over at ESPN, Heather Dinich has the Lions as the No. 10 seed and facing No. 7 USC in the first round.

“The committee doesn’t factor in rematches when compiling its top 25,” Dinich writes. “During the seeding process, there won’t be any modifications made to avoid rematches or games between schools from the same conference. And this is a rematch. Penn State will travel to USC on Oct. 12. The winner of this game would face Ohio State and Penn State hosts the Buckeyes on Nov. 2. USC doesn’t play Ohio State during the regular season.”

Quote of the day

“Another very good football team, another top 10 football team in the country. We’ve got to go in there and just continue to get better as a football program and as an organization. And we will. Very familiar with their coaching staff. (Penn State head) coach (James) Franklin is a guy that, not only do I have a ton of respect for, (but I) have a relationship with, and a man that as a minority coach, you look up to with the success he’s had and what he’s done up to date.

“Then (Penn State defensive coordinator) Tom Allen was a guy who was the head coach of my alma mater. Been a friend for many years here and and then his nephew worked on our staff through that relationship with me and Tom before going to Penn State and there now. And there’s other guys on that staff that I’m just familiar with, and they do a great job. Very well coached football team, a team that’s consistently good, a team that’s consistently a top 10 football team and a team that will give us everything we can handle. And we’ve got to be on our point and again, make it about us and how we can get better as a football team as we get closer and closer to conference play.”

–Kent State head coach Kenni Burns on PSU.
