ESPN, NBC execs express continued interest in Charles Barkley, Stephen A. Smith says working with him would be ‘a dream come true’

ESPN and NBC have both expressed interest in adding Charles Barkley to their sports broadcasting lineups in the event he ever ends his run with TNT.

Barkley has been with TNT for more than two decades, essentially becoming the face of the media giant’s NBA coverage. But with TNT set to exit the NBA market after the upcoming season, talks about Barkley’s future whereabouts have become quite popular.

At a Front Office Sports ‘Tuned In‘ summit on Tuesday, execs from both ESPN and NBC chimed in on Barkley. They both indicated extreme interest in getting Charles Barkley should he step away from TNT.

“That would be a perfect world,” said Burke Magnus, ESPN’s president of content. “The entire industry is interested in Charles. He’s really that special.”

Top ESPN talent Stephen A. Smith also chimed in, saying during an interview session that working with Barkley would be “a dream come true.”

Clearly, a lot of folks would love to work with Barkley, who has become one of the most affable announcers in the business.

But Charles Barkley is currently toward the front end of a 10-year contract with TNT, though he reportedly has an out in his contract if TNT does not have NBA rights.

Still, just last month TNT reiterated that Barkley plans to work out his contract with the company.

“TNT Sports and Charles Barkley today reaffirmed his long-term commitment that will see the broadcasting icon and Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer exclusively contribute to TNT Sports for many years to come,” a press release read from TNT Sports on Aug. 6. “Barkley, who signed a 10-year agreement with TNT Sports in 2022, will be entering his 25th year with the company.

“One of the most critically acclaimed broadcasters of all time, Barkley is a five-time Emmy Award winner for outstanding sports personality — including this past year. He and the Inside the NBA show — winner of 21 Emmys — have been the recipient of many acknowledgments including induction in several Halls of Fame.”

In any case, don’t be surprised to see a host of interest in the legendary broadcaster should he choose to step out from under the TNT umbrella.
