Purdue football Number Crunching: Notre Dame week

Here’s a quick look at the numbers surrounding Purdue football and Notre Dame week.

2007

Last time a Purdue-Notre Dame crowd was played before a sellout crowd. Saturday’s game will break the streak of three-straight non-sellouts in games played in West Lafayette (2009, 2011 and 2013). Prior to that, Purdue had sold out every home game with Irish from 1961 to 2007–a string of 24 straight capacity crowds.

Hudson Card had a record day against Indiana State completing 96 percent of his passes.

10/22

The month and year of Hudson Card previous best passing performance. Card was 21/27 against West Virginia while playing for Texas. His best passing percentage at Purdue was in his third game with the Boilermakers, when he went 32/46 (69.6%) against Syracuse in a loss.

2005

The year that Purdue had a bigger home opener crowd than the 59,488 that witnessed the 49-0 drubbing of Indiana State. Coach Joe Tiller’s ninth Purdue team drew 64,757 in a 49-24 win over Akron on Sept. 10, 2005.

Gary Danielson, pictured here against Washington in 1971, started in three seasons at quarterback for coach Bob DeMoss from 1970-72.

20

Years since Purdue Cradle of Quarterbacks member Gary Danielson served as a color analyst for a Purdue game, something he will be doing this weekend with play-by-play announcer Brad Nesler for CBS. The last game Danielson did involving the Boilermakers was Oct. 23, 2004, when No. 13 Michigan beat No. 12 Purdue 23-21. Danielson moved from ABC to CBS in 2006.

7

The Boilermakers spread the touchdown wealth against Indiana State.

Number of Boilermakers who scored a touchdown in the win over Indiana State. Coincidentally, all were the first career TDs. It was the first time in a dozen years that it has happened. Eight different Boilermakers reached the end zone in Purdue’s 54-16 win over Eastern Michigan on Sept. 15, 2012.

30

Years since Notre Dame has lost back-to-back games as a double-digit favorite. The Irish were -28.5 against Northern Illinois last week.

11 for 110

A familiar problem was present in Game 1 for the Boilers – penalties. Purdue recorded 11 penalties for 110 yards, fifth-most in the country and second in the P4 to Michigan State (12 for 140 yards) in Week 1 games. Under Jeff Brohm, Purdue was commonly one of the lower-penalized teams in the country (average 81st in the country in penalties per game), but last year, Purdue was the third-most penalized team in the Big Ten.

Purdue’s Rondale Moore scores as Purdue upsets Ohio State in West Lafayette on Saturday October 20, 2018.

1-2

Since the beginning of the Brohm Era (2017), the Boilermakers have been 1-2 as a home underdog of 11 points or more. The Boilermaker victory came on (you guessed it) Oct. 20, 2018, when Purdue whipped Ohio State 49-0 as a 12-point home ‘dog. Purdue was a 17-point underdog last year in a 41-7 loss to the Buckeyes, and a 13.5 ‘dog in a 28-10 loss to Michigan in ’17. Additionally, Purdue has beaten seven ranked foes over the past six seasons, despite being teh underdog in each of those games.

16

Victories by Purdue all-time against a ranked Notre Dame squad. Seven times ND was ranked in the top-five and four when it was the No. 1 team in the country (1950, 1954, 1965, 1967).

35+

Purdue was a 35.5-point favorite against Indiana State, only the seventh time since 1999 that Purdue has been favored by 35+ points. The Boilermakers have never been upset in that spot, winning by 43 points on average.
