Mercer outfielder Treyson Hughes to officially visit Ole Miss Tuesday
Ole Miss and head coach Mike Bianco didn’t have the 2023 season it hoped to have. The defending national champions struggled mightily all season with injuries, struggles on the mound and at the plate and finished with an abysmal 25-29 overall record. Even worse, the Rebels were just 6-24 in the Southeastern Conference. But help is potentially on the way in the form of Mercer outfielder Treyson Hughes.
Ole Miss will play host to Hughes on Tuesday for an official visit. Sources say Tennessee, who will play in the Hattiesburg Super Regional this weekend, are also in the mix.
The sophomore from Warner Robins, Ga., introduced himself to the college baseball world in 2022, hitting .317/.403/.576 with 14 home runs. This year, he was even better. Hughes started all 58 games for the Bears and hit a team-leading .387 with 11 home runs and 52 RBI. He also led Mercer with 85 hits and 15 doubles. The sophomore slugged .604 and boasted a .504 on-base percentage as well.
The 6-foot-3, 185 pound prospect prepped at Houston County (Ga.) where he was rated as a 9.5 prospect, per Perfect Game. Originally committed to West Virginia, Hughes flipped to Mercer after leading HCHS to the 2021 state championship.

After the 2022 season, Treyson Hughes was named a Freshman All-American.
This year, the NCAA Transfer Portal target was named 2023 All-Southern Conference First Team by the coaches AND the media. He was also a 2023 Southern Conference All-Tournament Team selection. The single season runs leader in program history (74) led Mercer to a 33-25 overall record in 2023 as well as a 13-8 record in the SoCon.
Mike Bianco and Ole Miss look to “take advantage” of the portal for 2024.
“When you look to the next year, we’re done with this year,” Bianco said on Friday. “Other teams are still playing and they’re trying to combo it. Now we can put all our attention (to recruiting). It’s not a position you want to be in, but we certainly will try to take advantage of it.”
Several members of the team have entered the portal and/or intend on listening to all offers from MLB organizations in this year’s draft. But Bianco says it gives him a decent idea of what he’s working with and needing for next season.
“The biggest thing is to get organized,” Bianco said. “(Carl Lafferty) and them will hit the ground running recruiting-wise… We have to get on the road for the next week to see games and then put together a plan for the rest of the summer.”
