Nick Saban addresses being ‘the rookie’ on ESPN College GameDay

Nick Saban addresses being ‘the rookie’ on ESPN College GameDay

Nick Saban has been a very successful addition thus far on the desk of College GameDay. It has been an adjustment for him, though, to become a new part of their team on Saturdays.

Saban spoke about his time to this point through two appearances on GameDay in Dublin and College Station during ‘The Pat McAfee Show’ on Friday from Ann Arbor. He said he still feels like a new member, especially with what he’s still learning about being in the media. However, he’s being as aware as he can to be a welcome part of the kickoff to each weekend.

“Well, you know, I’m very much the rookie. Learning the ropes,” said Saban. “Not in terms of having information that you want to put out there but when to say it, how to say it. How to respect the people around you, how to have the conversation. How to fit with everybody because we’re a team. On every team, you have to be able to fit into your role on that team, which I’m really conscious about trying to do.”

Rece Davis, Kirk Herbstreit, Lee Corso, and Desmond Howard had already added a new seat last year with McAfee. They’re now including their second in as many years with Saban following his retirement from coaching in January.

Now, McAfee is, according to Saban, becoming a brace for him to lean on during the show. They couldn’t be more opposite in demeanor but his energy allows Saban to have the time to calm himself

“You’ve made it easier for me, though,” said Saban as he looked to McAfee. “I mean sitting by you makes it easier for me because I’m less anxious.”

“You are every aggressive in whatever we’re talking about or whatever we’re doing,” Saban said as they laughed. “I didn’t know exactly what word to use there.”

With how he has contributed, this is the first of hopefully what are many seasons for Saban on College GameDay. It’ll only get better by then too as he further adapts to retired life while commenting about what’s happening on the field rather than coaching a team on it.
