Following his arrest in Miami, Florida on Saturday, the Dallas Cowboys have released wide receiver Antonio Callaway, according to NFL reporter Ari Meirov. The Miami native was arrested for driving with a suspended license.
The Cowboys signed Callaway to their practice squad last November. The team then signed him to a futures contract in January.
Releasing Callaway opens up another roster spot for the Cowboys ahead of the mandatory minicamp on Tuesday. On Monday, the team had a handful of free agents come in for workouts and signed wide receiver Tyron Johnson. Johnson, an Oklahoma State alum, played two games with the Houston Texans last season.
Cowboys cut Callaway, sign Johnson
The Cleveland Browns selected Callaway, a former Florida Gator, in the fourth round of the 2018 NFL Draft.
During his rookie season in 2018 with the Browns, he was also arrested for driving with a suspended license and marijuana possession.
The league suspended him for the first four games of 2019 for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy. Then, the Browns cut him in November as he faced another lengthy suspension.
He spent part of 2020 on the roster of the Tampa Vipers in the XFL. However, the pandemic closed down the league. The Dolphins picked him up in the fall of 2020, although Callaway still needed to serve his suspension from 2019. Miami waived him before the season ended.
By the time he got to the Cowboys last fall, he’d also spent time with the Chiefs, although he never played in a game.
He’s appeared in 25 games in his career, but none since 2020. He made 14 starts with the Browns, catching 53 passes for 695 yards and five touchdowns.
