Toledo Central Catholic WR/DB Jaylen Watson has a new scholarship offer to his name. That came from the Iowa Hawkeyes on Sunday after the 5-foot-11, 175-pound Watson impressed the coaching staff with his work at cornerback during their one-day camp.
“I think they liked the way I came out and went about my business,” Watson told HawkeyeReport.com. “Just the way I move and how well I take coaching. Also, I ran a 4.47 forty today, which is my personal best.”
Watson, who transferred from River Rouge High School in Michigan to Toledo Central Catholic this off-season, shows great playmaking ability on film. That is why he already has several offers on the table, but all of those are at wide receiver whereas Iowa projects him at cornerback in college.
“I’m so excited and humbled,” said Watson, whose uncle Fred Russell played running back at Iowa. “I knew I could play DB at the next level.”
Currently, Watson’s offer list includes Iowa, Cincinnati, Minnesota, West Virginia, Louisville, Maryland, Marshall, Miami-OH, Toledo, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Western Michigan, Bowling Green, Kent State, and Liberty.
Up next on Watson’s schedule is a camp at Cincinnati on June 8 and one at East Carolina on June 18. Also, Iowa is hoping to get him back on campus for an official visit this month now that they have offered, but want him to take some time to think it over first.
“They really want me to take a few days to think about if I really want to play DB in college, but the ball is in my court,” Watson said. “They really want me to be a Hawkeye.”
