No. 11 Owensboro Catholic annihilates Daviess County in 58-8 win

The No. 11 Owensboro Catholic Aces are off to a hot start in the 2024 season. Last week, they owned Apollo on the road in a 50-13 win. Tonight, they own the city after a huge 58-8 win against the Daviess County Panthers.

Within two minutes of the start of the second quarter, the Aces had a running clock to close out the rest of the game. Since the night went the Aces way from the start, senior quarterback Brady Atwell and company had a lot of wiggle room to play with and see what sticks.

“[In practice this week] We just focused on ourselves and the small details,” head coach Jason Morris said after the win. “It’s kinda like what Nick Saban says, ‘Make each play a game within itself,’ so that’s the kind of approach we’re taking.”

Atwell delivered the first touchdown of the night, running it from the 16-yard line to put the Aces on the board at 7-0. After a three-and-out forced by the O-Cath defense, a botched fake punt by Daviess County led to a safety for the Aces, giving them a 9-0 lead. Another Aces possession led to a touchdown reception to senior receiver Dereon Crowe, and the Aces were up 16-0 just like that.

Owensboro Catholic ended the first quarter ahead 23-0 after Cameron Woodward ran in for six. At this point, the running clock was near, it was just a matter of when it would kick in.

Atwell threw another touchdown, but the defensive scoop and score by junior Barrett Evans is what gave the Aces a running clock at 37-0 with 10:25 left in the second quarter. Atwell threw for another touchdown reception to end the first half at 44-0.

QB1 had a confirmed 290 yards minimum before the end of the first half. He showed face for the first drive of the second half before passing it on to the second stringer in the third quarter.

The Aces went on to score two more touchdowns before the end of regulation, allowing the bench to get minutes and the starters to rest their legs.

“We want to keep it rolling — give everyone the ball, win every game, and take it one day at a time,” Atwell said after the win. “I think as long as we do our thing, we’ll be back in Kroger Field come December.”

With this type of offensive productivity, the Aces are well on their way back to Lexington. Owensboro Catholic looks ahead to play Greenwood at 7:00 p.m. CT next Friday in Bowling Green.
