JUCO DB Chancellor ‘Champ’ Anthony officially visits Auburn, says news could come soon

Chancellor “Champ” Anthony, a 2023 JUCO defensive back from Tyler Junior College in Tyler (Tex.), made an official visit to Auburn over the weekend.

The 6-foot-1 175 pound versatile defensive back is eligible to play as soon as the 2023 season and should have three years remaining to play.

Anthony, originally from Cedar Hill (Tex.) Trinity Leadership, played in 4 games during the 2022 season. During those 4 games, he 14 tackles, 13 solo, 2 pass breakups and an interception.

Auburn had full intentions of filling its 85 scholarship limit during the offseason. There was an attempt to bring in New Mexico State DB transfer Syrus Dumas, but it did not work out.

Could Anthony be added to the 2023 roster? It sounds possible.

BYU seems to be the biggest threat to Auburn at this moment. Tyler Junior College head coach, Tanner Jacobson, is a former BYU defensive back, so there is some familiarity with that school.

Auburn, though, has now made a big move in getting Anthony on campus, and appears to be in a good spot with him.

News soon?

Concluding the visit, Anthony told Auburn Live that there could be some news regarding Auburn soon.

“Yes sir, we might have some news for you soon,” Anthony said.

Everything went well with his visit.

“I loved the visit, I loved the coaches, I loved the people around,” Anthony said. “I love the facilities of course, I’ve never seen nothing like it. It was a great experience, I just really loved it.”

Anthony does not worry about where he might fit in the secondary for Auburn. He believes he can play each position if needed.

“As I said I can play all five (spots),” Anthony said. “It’s really wherever the coaches need me at the time. Day by day, week by week, wherever they need me that’s where I’m going to play.”

First trip to Alabama

Anthony went to Junior College hoping he’d soon have a chance to make the big jump.

“I’m from Fort Worth, Texas,” Anthony said. “In the tenth grade I moved there, went to Trinity Christian, then I transferred to Mansfield with Coach Brown and his staff. Then, I went to Tyler Junior College out of high school. I didn’t like the offers that I had. Went there, balled out there for a couple of months and now I’m here.”

The connection with Auburn’s two secondary coaches was important.

“Man, Coach Crime, that’s a character right there I’m not going to lie,” Anthony said. “Coach Crime and Coach E (Etheridge), I love those guys. I felt like I’ve known them for a minute.”

His first trip to the state of Alabama was one to remember, and probably will not be his last.

“That’s really important because I care about football enough myself,” Anthony said. “Being out of my hometown, coming to Alabama, it would be a little different. Being somewhere that I feel like I can trust these people, that is very important to me. I’ve never been to Alabama, this is my first time stepping foot in Alabama, but it has been a good experience, I love it.”
